    Biography

    • Director, Cardiac Surgery, UH Parma Medical Center
    • Clinical Instructor, CWRU School of Medicine

Gregory D. Rushing, MD, received his medical degree from the University of South Florida in 2002. He then completed his general surgery training at Eastern Virginia Medical School, followed by thoracic surgery training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and an aortic/endovascular fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. He is a graduate of Ohio State University.

In 2021, Dr. Rushing joined University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute as lead of the cardiac surgery program at University Hospitals Parma Medical Center. He is also an Associate Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Rushing has developed a clinical and research practice focused on aortic valve, aorta and cardiac arrhythmia disease. As a skilled surgeon in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), he is a valuable member of the institute’s Valve & Structural Heart Disease Center team. He also collaborates with vascular and cardiac surgery colleagues in advancing the institute’s Aortic Disease Center, which provides open and percutaneous treatment to patients with complex aortic root and arch disease. In order to help improve the treatment of atrial fibrillation, Dr. Rushing completed the American Association for Thoracic Surgery James L. Cox Fellowship in Atrial Fibrillation. He also leads UH Harrington Heart & Vascular institute’s program for the surgical approach to cardiac arrhythmias, with an emphasis on the development of minimally invasive approaches. To further the program, Dr. Rushing developed the Surgical Arrhythmia Clinic, a clinic he also leads.

As with many academic surgeons, Dr. Rushing has a passion for education. He is active in medical student, resident and continuing medical education through the Department of Surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. In addition, he is Associate Program Director for the ACGME Thoracic Surgery Residency at UH Cleveland Medical Center. Dr. Rushing particularly enjoys working with the pre-clinical medical students in the Summer Scholars Program, which seeks to encourage medical students to pursue careers in cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Rushing is an active member of the Association of Academic Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.
